This past week has been rough and uplifting at the same time. You could feel the shift in the world, as many people started to share their experiences with implicit bias, racism and discrimination. As they shared, the people who once spoke over them now listened. All of this dialogue made me think of integrity. Are we teaching it in our households? What are the core values that we are upholding on a daily basis? Have we shared this with our children? Let’s turn inward and examine a few things.
As a “super mom supporter” I must say that mothers hold the amazing power of teaching children how to love. Children practice what they see far more than what they hear. If mothers are proactive in instilling love, anti-racism, and inclusivity then our world will change for the better. The first step is to examine ourselves. We must do this to ensure that our display of integrity is genuine. Do you know what your core values are?
In Brene Brown’s book Dare to Lead, she talks about the idea of what a core value is. She says that you only have 1 set of values. You cannot have a set for work and a set for home. You are authentically who you are at your core wherever you go. She also suggests to have a maximum of 2 core values. You can see her Core Value List by clicking here.
Once you define what your core values are, it is important to dedicate time and energy into building upon those values. They will become a strong foundation from which you make your life decisions. Always check back to make sure your decisions align with your values. This includes where you work, who you spend time with, and how you treat others.
As you live your life this way, you can proudly display your integrity. Integrity is defined as “the quality of having strong moral principles and honesty; moral uprightness. It is the state or quality of being complete.” This is an intangible treasure that we all can pass down to our children. Imagine a world that prioritizes people who have integrity, and that teaching/building integrity within each person is intentional within all homes. What a dream!
I hope that all of the necessary conversations that happened this week continue to fuel us towards a better tomorrow. We have to be consistent and unified to create the world of our dreams, that we all wish to raise our children in.
